For the Kogi state primary election, the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress, decided to run important governors unopposed.

In a letter dated April 6, 2023, Acting Senator Abubakar Kyari informed the Independent National Electoral Commission of the decision to switch back to direct primaries from the indirect approach.

We refer to our earlier letter from January 25, 2023, with reference number APC/NHDQ/INEC/19/023/191, in which we informed the commission of the primary election method for the holding of the governorship primary election in Kogi State.

 But instead of the previously reported indirect contest method, our main political party, the Progressive Assembly, has changed how the gubernatorial primary election will be conducted.It will still be held on Friday, April 14, 2023.

Due to the foregoing, a special convention will be held to determine who received the most votes in the primary election for governor, which will be held on Saturday, April 15, 2023.

Abdulkarim Asuku, Bello's chief of staff, is in the running to succeed him in January. For the collection of nomination and expression of interest forms from the APC National Office in Abuja, Comptroller Ahmed Ododo and Commissioner for Local Government and Basic Affairs, Salami Ozigie-Deedat, paid N50 million. James Faleke, the head of the House Finance Committee and secretary of the APC Presidential Election Commission, is one of the other contenders in the primary. Senators Smart Adeyemi of the Kogi West Senatorial District and Murtala Ajaka of the APC, who is the undersecretary for national public relations.

Political commentators are speculating on whether Bello would be willing to sacrifice his deputy governor, Edward Onoja, who has never concealed his desire to serve as the candidate's future leader in Kogi West in an impartial capacity.
