The governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, stated on Monday that the federal government might not be able to continue paying employee wages through June 2023 without resorting to huge money printing or eliminating fuel subsidies.
 
Obaseki mentioned this in his speech at the May Day celebration in 2023, which had the subject "Workers' rights and socio-economic justice," and was held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
 
 
The governor urged the country's workers to abandon the custom of reacting after decisions affecting them have already been made and assured the workers that his government would continue reforms and initiatives to improve worker welfare and ensure better livelihoods for the Edo people.
 
He instructed the employees to hold the government responsible for its policies and programs.
 
It would be a miracle, according to Obaseki, if the federal government and state governments were able to continue paying salaries through June this year without resorting to major money printing or eliminating gasoline subsidies. Either of these choices will cause more suffering and hardship for Nigerians, especially workers.
 
"We must all cooperate to ensure that the employees are not left to bear the burden and suffering of these measures, which must be implemented. Workers must now stand up and make sure they support any conversation about eliminating subsidies. You must abandon the custom of responding after these policies are put in place and instead insist on taking leadership and ensuring complete transparency and exposure. If we are all engaged in reform, then all Nigerians—not just the oppressed—must share the gains and losses that result from the reforms.
 
Obaseki remarked, "I am delighted to declare that Edo workers are today the best-paid workers in Nigeria. This reaffirms the dedication of my government to the welfare of workers in the state. I was astonished that it took the Federal Government and other state governments a full year to follow suit after we announced the increase in the minimum wage to N40,000 at this location last year.
 
The day the federal government is able to pay its new minimum wage and issue a check to any federal worker, that day, we will match the federal government and do the same for state workers, I have promised the Edo workers present today.
 
 
"As your governor, I'll make sure that employees are treated appropriately so that your take-home income actually enables you to live at home. Over the past six years, our government has remained true to its word by paying staff salaries and retiree benefits promptly and on schedule.
 
Salary payments are customarily made no later than the 26th of each month, and for any holiday celebrations, our employees are paid in advance so they have money to enjoy themselves.

In Edo State, he continued, "We currently do not have any arrears of promotions because I have approved the promotion of all staff for 2022, which I believe will improve staff morale and performance."
 
The governor praised the laborers' contributions to the state's expansion and development, saying, "Our vision is to make Edo State the best place to work and live in Nigeria."
 
In spite of the challenges brought on by the Federal Government's bad administration of the country, he continued, "I admire the sacrifices of our employees and their unflinching dedication and fervor as these have led to the progress and development of our dear State in the previous six years.
 
"Our employees are the unsung heroes of society and the heart of our economy, and your welfare will always come first. This is why we will keep moving forward with a number of reforms to raise your morale and productivity, guarantee the correct incentives, and create the conditions necessary to provide the people of Edo with high-quality services. This is on top of the reforms we've already started in areas like agriculture, healthcare, technology, economy, and many more.
 
"I value the sacrifices made by our employees and their unwavering commitment," he said.
 
"We are investing in infrastructure to give our employees a modern, better-equipped, and dignified work environment so they can be more productive and provide top-notch service to our people," he continued.
