Rauf Aregbesola, the interior minister, has stated that the federal government intends to start a home delivery service for passports.
 

He claimed that the government wanted anyone who wanted a passport to be able to get one without any hassle in a timely manner for a fair price.

 

 

The minister made his remarks on Saturday at the launching of the Auchi, Edo State, Passport Front Desk Office of the Nigeria Immigration Service.

 

The minister was described as promising to finalize talks with the Nigerian Postal Service on the use of its quick mail service to begin delivering passports to Nigerians in a statement by his media adviser, Sola Fasure.

 

 

"What we are doing here is significant for two main reasons," the statement said in part. The first is that Nigerians, especially those living abroad, have a right (and perhaps a requirement) to own a Nigerian passport. The majority of people who own a passport do so for identification purposes, with the exception of those who are currently traveling abroad or intend to do so. Being able to flash the passport's greenback is also a source of pride for some.

 

"However, for those who reside outside of the nation, their passport serves as legal identification. Unfavorable outcomes could result from being unable to create it when needed. Therefore, the government aims to offer passports to everybody who requests one in a timely manner, at a fair fee, and without any hassle. The second is the desire to depart from the norm, which follows from the first.

 

We are close to finishing discussions with NIPOST to start sending passports produced for Nigerians anywhere in the globe utilizing its fast mail service.

 

Aregbesola claimed that Edo State had one of the highest rates of passport applications in Nigeria, and he added that the recent rise in demand will probably lengthen the wait time between filing an application and picking it up.

 

According to our current working schedule, a new application would take six weeks to process following the registration of biometric data, and a renewal would take three weeks. This is reasonable, competitive, and adheres to best practices around the world.

 

The waiting duration at the application and data registration stage is the problem, though.

 

Depending on the center of their choosing, all applicants will be placed in a queue to determine the registration date. Unfortunately, it can take two months in some centers with fierce competition because of the volume of applications. We are powerless to change this.

 

Applicants were also asked to make long-term travel plans, as doing so is necessary for moving, studying, working, having fun, or other reasons other than urgent national duties or medical situations.
