The Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations (AHPA) and the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) have both declared an indefinite strike.

The failure of the federal government to alter the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) and other demands, according to the disgruntled workers, is the cause of the strike.

The Medical and Health Workers' Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), the Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP), the Senior Staff Association of Universities, Teaching Hospitals, and Associated Institutions (SSAUTHRIAI), and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Associated Institutions make up JOHESU/AHPA, a conglomerate of four registered trade unions (NASU).

Vice Chairman of JOHESU Dr. I Ogbonna Chimela made the announcement of the indefinite strike Thursday morning in Abuja, saying, "Our members in Federal Health Institutions nationwide are hereby directed to withdraw their services indefinitely in response to the nonchalant, biassed, and lackadaisical attitude of the Federal Ministry of Health towards JOHESU members and the resolution of the expanded National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the unions held on Monday, May 8th, 2023."

The federal government was given a 15-day deadline to comply with the unions' demands in a letter the unions earlier sent to the Federal Ministry of Health on May 9.
