PRESIDENT-ELECT TINUBU ARRIVES NIGERIA, SETS FOR INAGURATION

Bola Tinubu, the next president, has landed in Nigeria following a business trip to France. On May 29, 2023, he is expected to be sworn in as president.

The President-elect has been in the news because of his contentious victory, which is currently being challenged in Abuja at the Election Petitions Tribunal.

The Tribunal announced plans to combine three different petitions that ask to have the results of the 2023 presidential election declared invalid on Saturday.

The court claimed that it had the authority under Section 50 of the First Schedule of the Electoral Act to combine all the petitions and make a decision on them all at once. The Independent National Electoral Commission's main attorney, Abubakar Mahmood, SAN, welcomed the ruling and told the court, "We are happy with the provision of the law and we are also happy with whatever position your lordships will take with respect to this matter."

"My lords, I firmly believe that the clause must be followed. It was explicitly stated that, unless the court orders otherwise, a petition to invalidate an election or return that is the subject of two or more petitions must be merged.
