According to Bola Tinubu, the president-elect, President Muhammadu Buhari should always anticipate doorbell rings after leaving office.
The highest national honor, the Grand Commander of
the Order of the Federal Republic (GCFR), was given to Tinubu on Thursday. At
the same time that Kashim Shettima, the vice president-elect, was awarded the
Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), Tinubu notified President
Muhammadu Buhari to prepare for knocks at his doors.
"I realize the privilege bestowed upon me today and the enormity of the task that lies ahead; whether you go to Daura or the Niger Republic, expect knocks on your doors", he said.
Tinubu
promised that he would not let down Buhari or Nigerians when he takes office on
May 29. He also commended the departing leader for paying tribute to the
deceased MKO Abiola, the victor of the disputed presidential vote of June 12,
1993. "President Buhari, you displayed bravery by making difficult
decisions that others would have avoided. One such choice was to declare June
to be Democracy Day and to honor the late MKO Abiola with the country's highest
honor, according to Tinubu. This decision also acknowledged the injustice of
the 1993 election's annulment.
"To the extent anyone could,
you went back in time to correct the record and bind up a gaping wound. Today
has special significance because of the justice you served in this case. I am a
straightforward man who enjoys the support and goodwill of the Nigerian people.
The people have confidence in us. Mr. President, you have performed your duty.
Now I have to perform that important duty. I am aware of the significance of
the honor bestowed upon me today and the work that lies ahead.
"I have to complete this race
successfully. We must advance in all areas, including security, the economy,
agriculture, jobs, education, health, and power. Less is not what the people
deserve. I won't let them down, nor will I let you down, Mr. President.
